This Is A Brief Explanation About GPS’s History

Global Positioning System as known as GPS is a radio navigation system for positioning using satellites. GPS can provide the position of an object on the earth with accurate and fast (three-dimensional coordinates) and provide information on the time and speed of moving continuously throughout the world. GPS is part of the Geographic Information System and is now a part of the needs of human life. GPS was first developed by the United States Department of Defense under the name NAVSTAR GPS (given by John Walsh). The GPS system is a satellite-based positioning system and is also a revolutionary position in the field of measurement and navigation. This system was originally a military navigation system that was designed, implemented, financed and managed by the United States Department of Defense since 1973. However, today this technology is being used for commercial purposes, just like effective geofencing advertising.

This system was the result of a combination of the U.S Navy’s ESTIMATION program and the U.S Air Force’s 621B project under the responsibility of the Joint Program Office. The first GPS satellite was launched in 1978. In the United States, GPS has been used for public use until now.

Initially, there were 24 MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) satellites that were used to help track positions by dividing the earth region into 3 parts each filled with 8 satellites. In its development, the earth is divided into 6 sections with 4 satellites serving per region. With 24 satellites in space, 4 to 10 GPS satellites at any time will always be observed on the entire surface of the earth.

GPS is used for war purposes such as guiding the direction of the missile or tracking the position of troops. In this way, it can be seen which friend or foe to avoid wrong targets or determine the movement of troops.

GPS is also widely used as a navigation tool such as a compass. Some types of vehicles have been equipped with GPS features for navigation aids. That way the driver can see the position and guide (tracking) the location to be addressed and look for alternative roads when stuck.
